Wellness Programs
More grocery stores are taking steps to help shoppers focus on their well-being, and H-E-B is focusing on its shoppers’ wellness with health screenings, nutrition services and meal planning help.
On the Second Saturday of each month, H-E-B pharmacies offer health screenings to check blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol and A1C levels.
Through H-E-B’s Wellness Nutrition Services, customers can also meet with an H-E-B dietitian for nutrition expertise and shopping support.
Consider using H-E-B’s meal planning program, too, that sends you weekly recommendations for meals, sides and snacks that fit your lifestyle. H-E-B regularly stocks thousands of organic, plant-based, gluten-free, dairy-free, allergen-friendly, and low-carb products to fit your lifestyle needs.
Start Your Wellness Journey at the Grocery Store
A trip to the grocery store can play a huge role in your wellness journey—for better or for worse. Here are some tips to make choices at the grocery store that positively impact your overall health and well-being:
- Make a grocery list. Planning ahead leads to healthier food choices while shopping. Opt for whole foods (food that’s as close as possible to its natural state) and nutrient-dense foods such as fruits, vegetables, proteins, whole grains and healthy fats.
- Plan your meals. With a meal plan in hand, you’re less likely to waste expired food or resort to processed, unhealthy fast food as a last-minute option.
- Don’t shop hungry. Do yourself a favor and avoid shopping on an empty stomach, which can lead to unhealthy, impulse purchases.
- Read food labels. Look for whole food ingredients and avoid being duped by “natural,” “sugar-free,” “organic” or “heart-healthy” labels that can mislead and hide unhealthy additives.
- Avoid processed foods. An easy way to do this is to shop the perimeter of most stores where fresh foods, like produce, dairy, meat and seafood options, are often found. These foods are more nutrient-dense.
- Fill your cart with the rainbow. To get a variety of nutrients, vitamins and minerals, you’ll want to eat a range of colors of fruits and vegetables. To be cost conscious, consider grabbing frozen fruits and vegetables that are often just as nutritious as fresh produce and last longer so there’s less waste.
- Reduce your exposure to pesticides. Consider purchasing organic versions of produce on the “Dirty Dozen” list curated by the Environmental Working Group that includes 12 types of produce found to have the highest levels of pesticide residue. The top contenders in 2025 are:
- spinach
- strawberries
- kale, collard and mustard greens
- grapes
- peaches
- cherries
- nectarines
- pears
- apples
- blackberries
- blueberries
- potatoes
As you begin your wellness journey, consider choosing a new home in a community designed to help keep you on that path. A community like Nolina where there’s plenty of recreational amenities and community events to better your overall health.
